Obituaries-Benjamin Lloyd Griffith
There is no death; what seems so is transition; This life of mortal breath
is but a suburb of the life Elysian, Whose portal we call death.
Benjamin Lloyd Griffith, the oldest of a family of six, the sons and daughters
of Joseph and Katherine Griffith, was born in Franklin County, Ohio, six miles
from the capitol; now incorporated in the city of Columbus, November 6, 1838
and passed away at his country home, December 6, 1931, aged 93 years and one
month.
Mr. Griffith was one of the early pioneers, having come to Williams county in
18 51 at the age of 13 years and with his parents settled on an uncleared farm
south of town, now within the corporation of Montpelier.
On November 9, 1862 he was united in marriage with Jane Porter, daughter of
James and Ruth Porter. This union was blest with five children, two sons and
three daughters, Howard R. Griffith of St. Petersburg, Florida’ Mrs. Alice
Weigle, Mrs Cora Ogle, and Mrs. Ethel Gosline, all of Montpelier. One son Ray
preceded him in death last April.
There were 20 grandchildren, 11 of whom are living and 19 great grand children.
Mr. Griffith was a Christian from childhood, and a life time member of the Methodist
Episcopal church and was a member of the first Sunday school organized in Montpelier
which was in 1852.
He was always most deeply interested in the church and its welfare, and on all
moral questions stood for the highest and best
